Jamie walked into the common room with a book in his hand. He was feeling nervous and a little bit lost. He had only been here a couple of days and was trying to adjust to the routine. He thought if he keeps his head down and out the way he'll be left alone.
He never thought he would end up in prison or that his parents would disown him for one stupid drunken mistake. Now he had to live with it as well as his other nightmares.
Jamie saw a seat near the edge of the common room where no one was around and sat in it. He opened his book. It was a James Patterson book that he borrowed from the library. usually Jamie didn't read and spent his time in the gym when at home.
He was feeling depressed at the moment just wanted to get distracted.

Antonio was bored. With everything in the medium risk area going smoothly he had very little to do. No one needed a lesson learnt or shanking. He had noticed the fresh meat that had come in, recognising one man he had dealings with in the past. A fine drug runner for his cartel in the past, hopefully he did not forget where his loyalties laid. Especially with that disgusting bastard king pin in the high risk trying to ruin his business.
There had a break in the common area, this was meant as a time for socialist. For Antonio this was trying to find out who would challenge his leadership, who would join him or who would end up as a snitch to the guards. He hated snitches. He took a walk across the ground like he owned the place, spotting a young fresh face who seemed to be reading. He could not help smile to himself as he walked over and sat down opposite the man.
For a few seconds he remained silent before pulling out a packet of cigarettes and lightning one up before moving the packet to the new fish, “Welcome to hell kid”. He said with a heavy Mexican accent before lighting his cigarette and pulling a deep drag, “I am Antonio but most call me loco. I run this block”. He smirked with that comment, “What are you in for? Domestic violence? Murder? Bit of manslaughter?” He was trying to eye up this kid. He was definitely someone useful, he had a lot of muscle and he could always use that.

Jamie had heard someone sit down and tried his best to ignore him. If he spoke to him he would answer back. He really didn't want any trouble. He looked up and swolled nervously. He noticed yesterday this man walking around with the look of authority and noticed how some shyed away.
The man spoke and told him his name and what he did. So this guy meant big business. If he played his cards right then he could have an easy ten year sentence without being killed. However it could also mean his sentence got stretched if he got caught. Pissing off Antonio didn't seem like a wise decision either.
Jamie saw the cigarettes on the table and took one. "I'm Jamie." He said nervously. "Involuntary manslaughter." He felt like he needed to explain. He wasn't a murderer, even if he did kill people while in the army. But he did that under orders, for his country. After his brother was killed by the Iraqis he stopped feeling guilty and did it more out of revenge. But that was what he kept to himself. "I got drunk one night while on leave. Some guy tried to start a fight. He was drunk too. We threw punches however my last punch he smacked his head on a rock, ended up in a coma and died. Then I was charged."
He felt tears in his eyes and lit his cigarette. Do not show you are weak. He told himself. He hoped Antonio didn't notice and Jamie looked away just in case a tear fell.

Tony listened as the young man spoke, he took a long drag from his cigarette as he leant back in his chair. In reality he was sizing this man up, muscle was always welcome in the Surenos. He raised an eyebrow when he heard this kid had been in the army, leaning back he had to hide his smirk, ”So you were betrayed by your own country? Locked away here and forgotten about”. He spat on the floor, ”Cerdos asquerosos”. He muttered quietly before leaning forward again on his chair.
He could see that this kid was almost in tears, it was obvious. Some men were weak in jail, no matter how physically strong they were. He could see it in the fresh meats faces how scared they were, lucky for them Tony was a man who liked building up his gang. He took another long drag before speaking again with a heavy Mexican accent, ”I will never get out of here. I was caught with murder and drug smuggling”. His eyes lit up slightly, ”What these putas don’t know is that I run one of Mexico’s largest mafias. I’ve done a lot more crimes than they know. Americans are not so much”. This was a chance to see how this boy was going to react to his statement, ”Most of the time these guards leave me alone. We have a bit of bribery going on. The prisoners in this block respect me. They know they will get shanked if they ever double cross me. Murder is easy, you’ve done it as a solider”. He paused again, studying the reaction, ”So this is a one time offer for you Jamie. I need muscle, someone to take down anyone nosing in my affairs. Maybe scare them a little. As after all you look like a strong man. In return, I shall offer you my protection. If anyone hurts you here they’ll be dealt with”. To Tony this was a fair deal, after all it wasn’t like he was going to offer him money or anything else yet. This kid would have to prove his usefulness.

Jamie sat and listened to what Antonio was saying. He almost laughed when he mentioned being betrayed by his country, for locking him up here. Jamie wiped the tear from his eye.. He looked at the mexican man, while taking a drag of his cigarette. "My country betrayed me the day my brother was killed." He spat with venom. With that he went silent for a minute. His brother laying there in his own blood. A gunshot wound to his heart and head. The orders to move on and leave him. Jamie didn't live him and he was punished for it later.
Jamie listened to what Tony was saying about running Mexico's largest mafia. He wasn't surprised at the slightest. Jamie could see with the way he held himself he was someone important. The man had offered him a choice and Jamie wasn't stupid. If he said no he knew his life would be hell. Besides what harm would happen to him if he sided with the Mexican? Jamie leant forward and whispered "What about Alex? Does he get protection too, if I agree to work for you?" Even though they had only been together a short time, Jamie had began to care for him a lot. Was it love at first sight he didn't know. "Ya know he use to smuggle drugs in and out of Mexico too." With that Jamie put out his cigarette on the table and waited for the man's reply.

So this kid already seemed to hate his country, that seemed like a good start. Especially when it came to particular guards in this prison who were ex military. He smirked slightly, ”Mexico is full of gangs because of the American government. I would prefer being in a Mexican Prison, life is easier there”. He was unlucky enough to be caught in America, ”The judge who sentenced me is dead though, idiot turned down my bribe. The Americans should know how we work”. Tony did not hate Americans, he accepted anyone into the group, mainly as drug runners but still muscle always helped.
So this boy confessed about someone he cared about. This was extremely useful information to be had, especially when it came to betrayal. He finished his cigarette before stumping it out on the table, ”I wouldn’t mention too loudly who your love interests are. That could be used against you”. He had a sparkle in his eyes, wouldn’t be the first time he murdered someone’s husband or wife. Still this proposal was useful for him, ”Yes he would have my protection. For that price though I expect you both to not be afraid of getting your hands a bit bloody”. He wanted to see how far Jamie was willing to go, ”That man there, the skinny one. He made me a lot of money. Very loyal and was great at his job. He has nothing to lose, if I told him to go kill someone for me I doubt he would hesitate. He doesn’t know who I am but I know him”. He turned to look Jamie in the eye, ”I gather information on everyone in here. I get to know everything about them. So when we make an agreement here, if you betray me I will take down everyone you care about. As for you, you would suffer your sentence in the high risk area pinned with several murder charges. So now that is clear do you agree to work for me?” Tony held out his hand, initiation was difficult to do here but he knew a man who could mark this man’s flesh with his gang sign.

Jamie looked at the man's hand and shook it. "I think I'll surprise you with what I can do." Another flashback of an Iraqi soldier begging for mercy. Jamie beat the man within an inch of his life and then shot him. Torture was another thing that was done in Iraq. All to find out who murdered his brother. Once he had found the man he had killed his wife and tortured him before shooting him in the head. "The judge should've taken that bribe. Oh well saved you a bit of money I guess. Just sucks that you've gotta do time." He took another drag of his cigarette. "I haven't really kept my relationship hidden. Besides you'd want Alex on your side." Jamie debated whether to tell Tony or not however as he was working for him Tony would find out sooner and later. Alex wouldn't mind him saying anything either. Alex had spoken to Jamie about getting protection from a gang. Jamie lent in very close to Tony so no one else could hear. "Alex is smuggling drugs into the prison and selling them on. He's not worried about being beaten up, just getting caught." He lent back and took another drag. Okay he was being a bit honest however Tony claimed to know everyone's secrets, so he must know what Alex was up to.
"Tell me what you need me to do to prove my loyalty. Murder? Torture? Beat someone up?" Jamie wasn't worried what he had to do. He also knew how gangs worked. He'd keep quiet if he got caught. Jamie was loyal always had been. Alex had told him about gangs in the past and how the operated. Alex had told him a story about someone that snitched and he had cut out his tounge. Jamie knew the risks and just hoped he wouldn't be the one to be betrayed.
